so thats a 30% decrease on the life span when we use enhancers right? how about if we feed them ordinary pellets? would that matter too?

8 to 10 years ?? You gotta be kidding me.

Sorry to tell you, Fh lifespan is only 3 years. 4 years max.

i've heard numbesr around 10 or so years. Regardless, after 5 or so years, the general health of the flowerhorn will decrease, as is the case with all living species. It's important to have a general idea of how old your flowerhorn is, as well as the relative age of the flowerhorn, if you were to purchase it. Thats why some sellers, instead of providing size, they provide months old etc. At about 1-2 years, the flowerhorn should be at it's maximum size and will remain that way for th erest of it's adult life.

If given proper care there's no reason why a flowerhorn shouldn't live 8-10 years. Most don't live this long because people are "pumping them up" all the time. Hormoned food is very bad for fish. So is feeding a very high protein diet all the time. Keeping a fish at high temperatures for a long time will also shorten its life span. Unfortunately this is very common with flowerhorn.

Exactly!!! Feed a lower protien food (30-40%) and do weekly water changes, and there's no reason why your FH wont live 8-10 years.

how about frozen shrimp and live small fishes? are they also considered as high protein?

Shrimp and fish are okay to feed as a treat, but you should also have a high quality pellet as his main diet. If you are going to feed feeders, I highly recommend you breed your own. Goldfish feeders from the lfs are known for carrying nasty diseases and aren't very nutritious either.

So if it depends on what strain you have, what is the ave. life span for each strain roughly?

I don't think the strain matters. Give your flowerhorn a nice big tank, a high quality diet and routine water changes and he should live a very long time.
