One of the main problems we faced in the flower horn hobby is internal parasites. Our most dreaded disease is the swollen mouth, bloated stomach and white feces which are mostly caused by live foods such as feeders, worms etc.
We have lost thousands of dollars of fishes from these diseases and we can almost swear on limiting our farm to ONLY our fish pellets. At one time we were supplementing our breeding stocks with bloodworms on top of the regular pellets and we ended up having all these problems. But all these stopped when we discontinued the bloodworms.
Well, of course we have heard of hobbyists feeding their fishes with live foods and everything is fine. As for us, we wouldnt want to take the risk again because we cannot afford to have any of our fishes falling sick once more. Better safe than sorry.
Just my two cents!

FHI 34 yes they love them.but it gets the tank dirty fast with the soil from the inside of the worms.

.Did you get my E-Mail about the SRS fish?

I used to feed my FH earthworms as a treat, but the tank got too nasty. I would'nt recommend it.

at what point should I stop feeding mine flakes??
right now he's eating tropical fish flakes and is only 1 inch long....at what point should I start giving him Hikari mini pellets?? 3 inches?
and where can I find Grand Sumo?
Poseidon X
Nov 3 2003, 09:35 PM
you should give him hikari cichlid complete while he is small.. that is a good food for smaller fish. You can get him on grand sumo and freeze dried krill when he gets a little bigger

buy pellets which doesnt contain artifical colouring agent!!lk out for high protein content!!choose the size of pellet that suze ur needs.....basically 3 sizes s/m/l
all r indicated on the bottle!!
live feed are gd!!but lk out for sick feeders..........quarantine feeder in a small tank for few day b4 start feeding it w ur fh
Poseidon X
Nov 9 2003, 09:31 AM

cichlid complete has the highest protein i have found 55% and most of which comes from salmon meal which is high in essential fatty acids, which will disolve fat while pumping up muscle maybe. Im going to continue to feed this stuff to my small flowerhorn up untill 4" range when i get them on a some imported pellets.

Yes gomyau, that is definitely one type of feed that we have come across here that has really been a surprise. I know that you won't be dissappointed when you try it. Also add some high quality Koi food for their beneficial enzymatic protein content. We have tried and tested many products out on the market and have found here in the USA some really great quality ones out on the market.

My FHs hate soaked food, I guess they don't like their pellets soggy, hopefully this won't lead to swim bladder problems
You can buy red color enhancer at www.kensfish.com as NatuRose Astaxanthan under Specialty Foods and the food there has a pretty high protein content.

Thought about that...but Figured if Had Poison would Die already...No?...i feed Only live roaches and lizards
if poisons u mean natural toxins in the body which are harmful to fish...I dont know...but never had a fish die from eating roaches ...could you point me to any sites which say that?...that would be greatly appreciated!

I wonder if i could use centipede to feed my fhs. I used to feed my Red Chili Aro with centipede, well actually everybody in Indonesia does feed their chili red with centipede. All those poisons would bring out mad colors to flower horn maybe...

Thanks for sharing the link...always good to be aware!
i am still a newbie to fish and am no expert on Any matter
are there any Live foods which there is NO risk of disease or bacteria?
We got all sorts of bugs in the tropics. And LH usually breaches to catch her own Lizards!
in My Limited Experience Live feeders fish are Usually disease transmitters themselves, will cause more harm than good and are not worth the effort! (I haven’t found a reliable source yet)
I thought the potential harm in roaches Less than Live Feeders and figured give it a try on something I don’t mind losing, my LH:
Roaches costs nothing and in My Opinion pose less threat to the health of the fish than unQT Feeders from the LFS. you dont have to QT your insects, pay for Meds or stock a small tank to pick them up in!
i think and its been said...You are What you Eat! and a lot has to do with Where the “food” in this case roaches, are Collected...like blackworms, bloodworms and tubiflex… it all depends on the Source and what goes Into them…Anything from a sewer is disgusting and unsanitary. Period.
it All comes down to what you think is fun and Best for you but more importantly Your Fishes!
Take care all

I've just started feeding my FH's with my new Beef Heart/Veggie diet yesterday. I've got a good amount of veggie mixed with the beef heart. The mix looks light greenish-brown. I thought I might have overkilled with the veggie and garlic, but they ate it. I also threw some Spirulina and Astaxanthin in the mix.
I'll let you guys know how things turn out.

bro in my opinion your fh has hexamita, white poops is one symptom of this disease. they say feeding live food to your fh during cold season will give your fh indigestion thus leading to hexamita. this is curable just search for the cure here in the site. good luck bro.
NOTE: You should treat this ASAP this is serious.
