about 55 with bio balls not including the pump and other misc stuff like ball valve and tubeing ..pumps very in cost mine was the mag 7 pump about 80 i could have gotten it for cheaper online but i wanted to support local bussiness aka lfs. most of the stuff were from wall-mart. the sump being 10 bux about 29 gallon and the tower drawer were like 12 bucks. tools i used were a dremel and drill. the drill was better because u can drill the trickle section with out melting the plastic as well as any other holes

Did you finish it yet? How is it working for you?

Jun 27 2006, 09:04 PM
yes i did finish but right now im actually working on my stand because i have no stand for it its on a table which i dont think will hold it up for a long time but i have tested it out and it works very good accept still kinda noisy because the drip plate is very high up and when the inlet flows down onto the drip plate it makes loud splashing noise, but problem was fix with a sponge just high enough over the inlet port

good bro David. You may need a check valve to prevent back flow. check the bend on Vinyl tubing (I prefer PVC).just my 2 cents.

ahh dont worry bro i changed out the tubing to a stiffer tubing also my over flow box has a durso stand pipe so i dont need a check valve and i dont worry about back flow or and siphoning

check valve on the return if you put the return nozzle submerged in your tank (not overflow box's pipe to the sump) because the backflow.

i dont need it cuz my return is on top and water will not reach it to siphon back the water

which section does ammonia/carb go? is it necessary with this set up? If i wanted to add some type of agranite or coral to assist in the p.h which section would i be able to put that in? which section if i wanted to add heater? or is that to much for this set up? or maybe taller tower or add additional pumps and tubs or something or am i totally thinkn over ill lol i tend to over think most times

I sold that system recently to one of a member here but it worked flawlessly for years the only down side was that the container bowed a little maybe you could use a smaller stronger sump container. Just make it so you can access it that way you don't get lazy on maintaining it.
Crush coral you can leave at the very bottom and carbon you can put at the very top or middle section as long as water is flowing thru the carbon for it to work correctly and since it is at the top it is easier to change out the carbon and floss when it is time to change it out. Bio balls can not be submerged in water. Heaters stay at the bottom where the pump is.
Maintenance: I just replace carbon every 2-3 weeks it helps with the smell and helps absorbs the color from the food. and replace the floss every month or so. When I do water changes I siphon the gunk down at the bottom.
