How to Ship Fish.

Okay, here goes.. many people sell fish as pickup only because they believe it's hard to ship fish.. but in fact, it's pretty simple. The hardest part is dealing with the shipping company.. haha.. a lot of employees will BS you.. but I would just not mention that it's live fish.. say it's water samples or something..

Okay...

Materials List:
Shipping box, whatever size you need.
Styrofoam sheets, or styrofoam box that fits shipping box.
Oxygen stones, 02 gas, or breather bags.
3 or 4 bags to put fish in.
Rubberbands to tie bags
Newspaper..

Step 1: Prepare Shipping Box

Get the box, line it up with Styrofoam, cut to fit. Make sure you have a piece for the top, as well.

Step 2: Prepare Fish

Make sure the fish have fasted for at least a day. Less stressful for the fish. Fill a bag with water, don't fill with air yet. Make sure it doesn't leak. Line another bag on the inside with newspaper(optional, makes it less stressful for the fish if it's dark). Place that bag in 2nd bag. Then, place those 2 bags in a 3rd bag, and 4th if you want to. Net fish, place the fish in the first bag. Fill first bag with 02, oxygen pill or if it's a breather bag, follow those instructions. Tie bag, then rubberband tie it. Now, Tie each of the other bags, one at a time. Once it's tied, your fish is ready to be shipped.

Just a mockup that I did for this guide, no fish inside

Step 3: Placing Fish In Box

You can line the inside of the styrofoam with newspaper to keep it more stable. Then, place the fish inside the box, and fill top with newspaper to keep it a bit tighter(optional). Close box with styrofoam lid. Then, close and tape box. Label the box with receiver's address, etc. Place labels or mark box. Mark arrows pointing up and mark box Fragile. Your fish is ready to be shipped.

Step 4: Ship Fish

Take the box to the post office, Fedex or DHL. UPS treats boxes like crap. USPS(Post Office) is cheapest, usually. Fedex and DHL, I've heard ship very well.

I hope this helps sellers out there. This is just my short guide to shipping fish...

Wow, nice guide. I'll follow your instructions when I ship you some fry that way it's your fault if they don't make it, lol... good guide though...

Good post breezie. I would fast the fish for 2-3 days though to make sure all the 50.gif is out of the fish.Breather bags will only work for small fry though, bigger fh will poke through the bag. Also a good trick LFS showed me for shipping fish, is to put the first bag upside down in the second bag so the top of first bag is in the bottom of the second. This helps keep the rubberband in place. And depending on the weather might have to use a hot or cold pack. Good idear to make this breezie, I'm sure this will help many members down the road!!

Yeahup.. thanks for the input guys..

Heat/cold packs, if used(in extreme weather conditions), put either an extra space of between the fish bag with styro, then, place the heat/cold pack in that area..

The upside down method, I've heard of as well.. but never actually tried or seen done..

Yeahup.. recommendation is for 2 - 3 days, but should be AT LEAST 1 day.. otherwise, bag will be filled with poo...

I learned this one the hard way, just ask Danz! Works very well, plus if it does leak, it stays in the second bag.

Thanks guys.. just trying to help the flowerhorn community grow a bit more, that's all.. how will it expand if most of the good population of flowerhorns stays in certain areas?

In my area, no one's even heard of flowerhorns..

for winter, what i do is tape the inside and outside of the styfoam so the cold air cannot it in there, sometime i used all purpuse glus to glue the styfoam together and seal the cold air out, so the fish can have a safe jouney but don't forget to put in at least 2 heat packs.

Thanks for the post. Last question. How we insure for the fishes? Correct me if I am wrong. I hear we can claim for the fishes went they die or the box damage. unsure.gif

if the box is damage or lost than you can file a claim for it. fedex are no longer take live animal.
