Full Version: What Kind Of Lighting System Should I Get? 60 Gallon Fresh Water Standard Tank

I have a 60 gallon fish tank and I need a new lighting system as the previous one isn't working. I've seen sizes range from 24" to 48". Also, the price seems pretty high for some of the lighting systems. I would like to run two bulbs, where one is pink or blue. Do you guys have any recommendation as to which system is the best bang for its buck? Please let me know what kind and where I can get them from. I'm in SoCal so any lighting systems for local pickup would be even better!

Simple T-5 setup or T-8 will work ... I would suggest at least 36"-48" if possible.. I can get the 3 bulb T-5 Hood 36" (2 white/ 1 pink) for around $75.00.. that is what i am going to use for my new system but for the best bang of the buck,, try the lights of america T-8 you get at home depot.. those run about $25 with single white T-8 bulb.. but they last forever!

I would like to run atleast a dual bulb so I can get a pink or blue light mixed in there. I was at home depot last night but the setups I saw there didn't look like I would be able to sit the lamps on top of the fish tank glass without mounting a brace to the ceiling. The ones I saw there looked like the bulbs would've touched the glass. I need a setup that can sit on top of the glass.

Where can you get one of those lights from? Is it near the Los Angeles area? I spoke to Total fish and Pets in Montery Park and he has a Flourescent lamp with 2 bulbs and stands to clip on the sides for 70 but he said I didn't need T5, and that I should go with his flourescent. Thoughts?

the flourescent lights do last longer but the color nor the intensity is nothing compare to T-5 lights.. I am also local in SoCal, Rowland Hts, and the one i am selling is the complete T-5 Hood with plastic legs and splash guard covering the bulbs.. I will have them in stock on friday if you want one, let me know for sure, so i can pick one up for you and you can pay me when you pick up.. remember, these are 36" with 3 bulbs and not two.. two white and one pink with 3 individual switches and they look like the ones from jebo.. silver hood.

would any of those flourescent lights from home depot work? I'm planning to install one of those into my DIY canopy but I don't have any splash guards. Can I run it w/o the guard?

I just used the light I purchased from Anthony (skinnychinaman) and it's amazing. Thanks for taking the time to meet up with me and providing me with a great deal. You are a very nice, honest, and straight forward guy. Thanks again Anthony.

these lights are $80 each which includes (36" black aluminum fixture with acrylic splash guard and mounting legs, 3 individual switches for the lights, 3 White T-5 bulbs, and BONUS 3 extra pink T-5 Bulbs)

As for the JBJ, I can get them, but it cost more if i just buy one.. so if you have the need of more then 3-6 pieces, I may be able to order them for you, as for price, I think they are around $180 or so.

I will get some pics for you guys as soon as I'm done with the treatment on my fish. My color is a tea yellow color right now because of the medicine. The lamp is very bright and works very well on my 60 gallon tank. In addition, the 3 individual switches is a nice tool as well and the pink bulbs compliment very well. I'll get some pics sometime this week!

For D.I.Y. lights and cheap, go to Home Depot and get the 2 bulb ballasts that costs about $8 and get rain gutters(preferably black) and end caps for the rain gutters. I've seen it done before and it looks good. I'm not skilled in electrical equipment but I'm sure it's a pretty easy install. Everything would cost less than $20 and you get 2 bulbs that can range from 25-40 watts. You can also get light panels and cut those in size as a splash guard. Cut it at the right length so that it would slide right into the gutter. The only thing I don't like with regular T-12 lights is that it doesn't imitate the blue-ish effect created by regular aquarium lights. But you can just get those Aquarium Bulbs and replace the Home Depot lights. If anyone knows electrical, let me know what I need to do. Thanks and good luck to all!!!
