Full Version: Tankmates For Fh
Flowerhorn USA > Flowerhorns & Hybrids > Beginners Discussion

this is a thread for beginners who are curious on which tankmates can be housed with their flowerhorn.
please share your experiences and select an option below for which tankmate youve had greatest success with.

my personal best have always been bichirs, they are tough fish and have only been harmed with the most persistent extremely aggressive flowerhorns.
they are somewhat entertaining as well, having a bit more personality than some of the tankmates/dithers above. in my observations, they have usually been left alone with only at 30% chance of being picked on or chased. if you wish to go this route, go with a 5-6"+ specimen thumbsup.gif

my second choice would be the raphael catfish, they are extremely armored and nocturnal. i have seen a few casualties however, the soft bellies are the weak spots tongue.gif. even with that there is a very minute chance (5-10%) of them being harmed or harrased. they are not entertaining at all though, they dont do anything but hide but they do scavenge uneaten food pretty well when the lights go off.

bp have my vote, funny little guys wink.gif

heh bp's have a strong lead... they are the most personal of the options above tongue.gif
however, they rarely hold their own with only the most feisty of parrots being able to do so or the most clever who know how to hide lol.

I have had quite a few different fish in with my floweres. I think so far the only fish that ever really been a problem was a red devil and after a while they just stayed on opposite ends of the tank and they were fine. All this will depend on your specific Flowerhorn. Mine are pretty laid back others can be monsters.

Right now a 4" red devil,6 exodons,4" midas, stone fish, chinese algea eater, golden puffer. After a month all is fairly calm with my 4"zz flower horn.I know this may change as they all get bigger. thumbsup.gif

it would also be interesting if everyone had some pics to share smile.gif
tankmates: kirin parrot, blood parrot, 5 bichirs and a pleco

the parrots get chased around all the time whereas the bichirs are left alone with only an occasional peck.
the bichirs harass each other more often than the flowerhorn does laugh.gif

I have success keeping a bichir and a yoyo loach with one of my bonsai FH. It works only because his mouth is slightly deformed and he can only chase them but not nip them.. All my other FH always hurt their tankmates sad.gif

my FH is with my silver arowana atm. They seem to be fine for now. Actually after i put the Fh in with the arowana, he seems to be more active then when the Fh wasnt in there.

Nice. I keep a gold nugget pleco with my ZZ in a 90g but they are both pretty small still. I may add a bichir. Ornate get way to big for a 90g right? Any suggestions on bichirs for a 90g beside senegalus.

I have mine with a BP, so far so good. I think that's the most common.
