I have spent the last 1.5 years raising this male up just to breed him to this female and he is finally big enough. They were really rough on each other in the beginning. They have been together about a month now and have spawned twice. I have about 400 fry growing fast from them. One of the fry ate about 20 others and totally exploded to a whopping inch in a month! He has now been isolated and is showing sure mp potential. Anyway let me know what you think of this pair. thumbsup.gif

They are a little too early to breed. It is exciting to see your fish pair up and breed, just remember to cull those who doesnt make the grades.

Good luck to the next breeding.

I agree with you on the early part, but as for the cull. what is the size to do it, I have had flowerhorns that show no potential at 2" and suddenly at 4" kpow ohmy.gif it exploted from feeder to madness.

do you have any suggestion or tips of the trade for the cull.

thanks

Really guys I let the fish do the culling

200 babies winds up becoming around 150. The weak get eaten and all the ones that I have seen so far have all come out real nice

New to the hobbie i keep reading culling someone please explain this term lol

"Culling is the process of removing animals from a group based on specific criteria. This is done in order to either reinforce certain desirable characteristics or to remove certain undesirable characteristics from the group. For livestock and wildlife, the process of culling usually implies the killing of animals with undesirable characteristics."

Ok glad to get that question resolved. I've got 21 fry should i be letting them cull themselves or is there a possibility that one will kill a good fry? Or should i be hand picking them out for culling? Im reading that people are all doing the culling differantly which way do you think is best? Im new to this sorry bro for all the questions. I am gunna need some help soon too because i have no idea how to sex these guys other than being told that most females dont get a kok. Ive been told the fins play a role in sexing too but not sure how to tell the difference yet!

It's okay, no worries. wink.gif

Culling is frowned upon by some enthusiasts as it still results in the act of killing a live animal and can be viewed as being cruel. Culling usually occurs with breeders that have several hundreds of fry in a batch (100-500). For most of us who simply purchase fry culling is kind of silly because why would we want to kill something that we just spent money on. You might want to look at it in a way of protecting your investment rather than killing it.

I just realized we are both getting way off topic in someone else thread, whoops, sorry Fishpimp.
