hey guys..this is my first post..
actually the flower horn made me register on this site..i thought you can help
the thing is my fh's kok started reducing suddenly..any idea why..and i used to keep him in a community tank..and he was quiet happy but like form around 3-4 days he hides behind the UV filter and wont even eat anything..i used to feed shrimps to him and arowana..the reason i think he was hiding was because my parrot fishes laid eggs and they were aggressively guarding there territory and used to attack my fh..correct me if i m wrong..
(they would even attack if i kept finger on the aquarium near their egg..very aggressive)
and yea the parrot fish ate theirs eggs last night when i returned from a movie lol:D
so now i would like to pair my fh and parrot fish..should i take the fh and parrot fish and keep them in a small tank to pair?
thankyou..

for breeding pairs I usually recommend leaving them in a wide open area of space, as they pair up they get very territorial. Keep them where they are now which is together in the same tank.

Hello there and welcome to FHUSA!
Most flowerhorn kok will reduce during breeding, it's normal. Yes, females get super aggressive once eggs have been laid. What size is your male flowerhorn and female parrot? Sounds like your male is getting punked by your female parrot, size might be a factor. I recently bred a flowerhorn and a blood parrot in my 60gl tank, check out the thread:

The first thing I look for when getting a new flowerhorn is the price. Buy whatever looks good to you and is within your spending limit. If you see a kok forming at a young age then it's a good sign.

Sounds like your flowerhorn is either much younger and/or smaller than your parrots. If this is the case and the parrots continue to attack your new flowerhorn he will eventually die like the other one.
How many inches is your new flowerhorn? How many inches are your parrots? If your parrots are indeed much larger then I suggest 2 things:
1. Buy a larger flowerhorn.
2. Remove the parrots from the tank.
What size tank are they in? How many gallons is your tank?

If you truly want to mate a flowerhorn and a parrot I will suggest:
1. Make sure the male is fertile and large enough (preferably 8 inches or bigger)
2. Make sure the female is fertile and smaller than the male (1/4 or 1/2 the size of the male)
3. Remove all the other fish, including the pleco
4. Place a flat clay pot at the bottom of your tank
5. Refer to this thread:
http://www.flowerhornusa.com/forums/index....c=32886&hl=*To ensure your male is fertile it's best to purchase him when he has already been proven fertile from his previous owner.
*To ensure your female is fertile make sure she has laid eggs before.
The reason your flowerhorn is not eating is because he is still getting used to his new environment and he could be stressed from all those larger tankmates. Fast him for a couple of days and he should turn around for you.
Good luck

Correct me if I'm wrong, fellow members, but I think FH's KOK generally reduces in size during breeding (although it does come back after some time)?
If this is so, I suggest you prioritize whether you want to breed, or pump up his KOK...
Whichever way you choose, I wish you good luck!

You are right Daniel. Kok goes down in size a little during breeding.

Your flowerhorn may be stressed due to the new environment and the much larger or more older territorial fish. A stressed fish is more susceptible to illness and may become weak.
I suggest giving your flowerhorn a tank all to himself with no tankmates so he can heal and grow confidence. Preferably a 60gl tank or bigger.

Sounds like bad water.
How many gallons is your tank? What filtration are you using? When doing a water change what type of water do you use, what additives do you use, how many gallons do you remove? You should test your water for high nitrate and nitrite.

Doing too many water changes or removing too much of the water too often will reduce the amount of beneficial bacteria within your tank dramatically. Beneficial bacteria is extremely important to the quality of your water and eventually to the life of your fish... but I'm sure you already know this since you have kept fish for five years.
I'm wondering what your nitrite and nitrate levels are?
konvikt
Jan 29 2010, 02:21 AM
yes i know this about the bacteria thing..but k listen today morning when i got up the eggs of the parrot were all ovr tha tank on the stones...last noight i saw it was only in their house but today it was all over the tank and the water is dirty now
AnthonyV
Jan 29 2010, 02:27 AM
If you have kept fish for several years then I'm sure you can easily tell us what the nitrite and nitrate levels are of your water. Also what type of filtration are you using?
Hopefully we can figure out the problem so your fish can be healthy and so your tank can be crystal clear.
