What ever you can afford I really like the XP3, and if you ever want to get a bigger tank you can reuse the same filter for a bigger tank.

or get xp4 if you want to go bigger lol but xp3 does the job. If not get a fluval 405 its your next best option. As for hang on back I really like the Aqua Clear 110 but thats a lot of flow for your tank. But there is not such thing is too much flow in this hobby

XP's are great filter but aquaclear filters are great too make crystal clear waters too...the only thing with canisters is the electric consumption is higher.

Get a canister filter.
If you're looking for a great value, get a Cascade. They sell them everywhere including petco and petsmart and other run-of-the-mill pet stores so you can get them cheap.
For a 40 gallon tank, get the Cascade with 3 trays. I like Cascade much better than Fluval, Magnum, and others because you can make your own filter media saving you alot of money and sometimes getting more performance. I have a Cascade, Fluval, Eheim, and a Magnum at home. The fluval is really quiet, but the filter media costs alot. Magnum is too loud and the integrated filter media for it sucks so bad. Eheim is ok. But i've seen the best performance from my Cascade.
