That's the beauty about flowerhorns, you never know how they are going to turn out. Some fish get big koks and nice colors early on and some are late bloomers. Give your fish some time, a variety of food, and proper care, and it will prosper.

I will! I already do daily 5% water changes and feed him 3 times a day. When should I break out the mirror?

Really no need to do daily water changes imo, 15% once a week is fine. I do 10-15% on sunday night, and then fast my fish on mondays. Tue-sat i pump him up like ahnold yaahh, it took a good month or so for my fh to show even the smallest sign of kok, hes 3 inches now and has a little lump popping out but nothing special. We will wait and see, but his colors/pearls are coming out nicely. Your zz definatley has a nice red coloration for sure.

Thanks. I don't really want a water kok for my FH, a large Semi Water kok is fine for me.. I just don't want it to have a hard kok Which I doubt because its father had a nice large water kok.. but its mother had a hard kok..

Oh, and can someone help me with the sex of my FH? I was told its a male.. but from its slow growth rate.. I'm thinking its a female..

From what ive been told/read 99% of ZZ flowerhorns will have some sort of dark flower spots on the dorsal fin. But once in a great while that is not the case. You will need to wait till its a good 4-5inches then flip it upside down and check the organs/vents to verify that. Give it a month or two and it will become more evident of what the sex is.

Here are some updates.. And its suddenly grown a black blotch on the dorsal fin.. Anyone have an idea if its male of female? Its vent tube points backwards.. and its vent looks more like a V than a U..

you wont be able to be 100% sure with out vening it and at that size it is really hard to be certain
