Hi guys just wanted to ask if anyone knows how to bleach large natural aquarium rock. These pieces are huge ranging from 15 to 20 inches wide and 15 to 20 inches tall. These rocks were given to me from a friend they are used and they do seem to have some green algea stains on them. Ive read that it is possible to bleach but thought i'd ask the experts. some of the pieces are upright and free standing also porus having some real small holes in them and some pieces lay flat and and porus with no small holes. If it's safe to do this how do i mix the solution and what is the process i need to take to perform this task, how do i know when the rocks are safe enough to put into the tank and does this bleaching also kill any thing that might be in the rock from the prior tank? The pieces are cool i'd hate to have to throw them out. Some portions of the rocks are green and some are black hard to tell in pic's.

that looks like lace rock. Should be fine to bleach it 1:10 ratio do it over night. Then rinse out and soak it again another night with out the bleach and add water conditioner to remove the bleach, then air dry outside

sweet thanks david! should i also scrub it with something or just leave it after the bleach treatment?

i have a ten gallon plastic tub so i'll do one gallon bleach and 9 water. when im done bleaching and soak in just the water with the conditioner do i just condition with the regular dose on a ten gall or should i be doubling the conditioner or how much do you think on that?
djrice69
easier way to do it half cup of bleach in 5 gal bucket... NOT 1 gal of bleach thats a lot!!!!

Alittle bleach does a long way

I WAS JUST GUNNA SOAK ALL OF THEM TOGETHER IN ONE BIG TUB SOME OF THE ROCKS ARE TO WIDE TO SQUEEZE INTO A 5 GALLON BUCKET. tHE TUB HOLDS 10 GALLONS SO IF YOUR SAYING HALF A CUP FOR A 5 GALLON THEN A WHOLE CUP FOR TEN GALLON IS GOOD TOO RIGHT? IS THAT ENOUGH TO BLEACH THE STAINS OUT? THATS WHAT IM TRYING TO DO GET ALGEA OFF AND BLEACH STAINS OUT
djrice69
yes it should be more then enough. You can put half now see how that goes within a few days if not add a little more

I agree with David, but make sure you soak rocks after using the bleach real good, if a large amount of bleach gets in with fish it may kill them. Use some de cholorinator may help in neutrilizing the bleach, post how rocks comes out after the cleaning.

hay guys i got up and checked the rocks this a.m. im shocked at how the all the green is gone. The black on some hasn't even budged and some of the rocks have aalot of brown which i just think is the color of them i'm just haappy the green is gone! i'm gunna put some elbow greese in scrubbing them today! I'll rinse them super good and bleach one more time unless you guys feel thats to much!
AnthonyV
I don't think another bleaching is necessary but if you really want to it's fine. Just make sure you rinse really well after and soak it with some water conditioners. pics, pics, pics smile.gif

yeh once is fine... don't forge to soak again with just plain water and then let it air dry
