Hey bros, do you think that that whole Mirror in front of your fish thing really work? I see a lot of people doing it lately. Here is a pic of Bro ###### practicing this. As we all know he has some of the best breeds of JHs anywhere. I'm sure you need the genetics for the kok, but is it like bodybuilding in which a person has the genetic tendency towards being muscular and when they throw a barbell around wham!! flex.gif . So if a FH has the genes to grow a nice kok, then the mirror will help them maximize their potential? What say the the Jedi order?

Hey Kuttklose,

I heard that the mirror will boost up their hormones to produce the kok, and gravel so they can play with will boost the kok too, I ont know if these methods are true, but it won't hurt to try. thumbsup.gif

Mirrors do help, but, the genes / lineage of the fish plays most of the part. Most of us here in Malaysia will use mirrors for our Kamfas. But, do not put it over a long period of time as the fish will loose interest. Personally, I will only use the mirror for an hour or two daily. Besides, I find that by placing the mirror beside the tank over a long period of time (6 hours) causes the fish to have stress marks.

biggrin.gif Good points so far, i agree that mirrors would help, but application is everything. I agree with the opinions that other hobbyist have voiced about mirror location. When you place a mirror on the outside of the tank, the flowerhorn will attempt to get at the reflection, only to be deflected by the glass. If he is constantly ramming the glass he is being negatively reinenforced to attack his image. Other hobbyist have suggested purchasing a cheap mirror at the dollar store which has a small handle.. normally with a hole. You can string the mirror inside the tank with the hole. When the FH attacks this mirror it will allow him to drive through him. In other words, his confidence will not be shattered. flex.gif

using mirrors are good but bewear, FH's do have a strong head and they will break the mirror.. i suggest the members who want to use mirrors to place them on the out side of the tank.. on teh side of the tank or in front. if u have enough room. seperate the tank in half and put another FH with it. placing two FH in one tank with proper dividers will also help with intense *KOK* expansion.

this is my two cent..

i've read somewhere that it does help, don't know if its true or not, but i do it cause it won't hurt and secondly, i just like to see my flowerhorn trying to intimidate his own reflection. biggrin.gif

Do not over use the mirror as a display of mirror image to get the fish excited.
Such application can only apply once in a while just to keep the fish active. Over use will definitely cause the fish to stress out.

Good day

Yeah thats true LH.BM my flowerhorn lost intrest when I put it in the morning, once I came home he's not excited no more, but after a week later he starts raming in to the glass again!

At least it still get back to its own shape. Ramping at the glass might cause fatal injuries towards the LH. If such cases happen and you happens to withness it, dont panic, just hold on to the fish, bring it near the surface and pump in lots of air. Hold it for 15mins, and chances that it might regain its concious

good day

Red Parrot works for me too. Or other small FH to chase around.
flowerhorn4ever

fh r vain fish!!the oni fish that needs mirror!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif mirror mirror on the wall, who is the prettiest fish of all!!

I guess to each their own, but I don't like the idea of putting a weaker/smaller fish in with the FH to use as a "punching bag." "o"/

One of my friends would do this for his FH. He would say, "To let the fish Kunbung!" flex.gif

I prefer to use another FH of the same size divided with a divider to 'excite' my FH's. thumbsup.gif That way, the weaker fish will never be injured. I also use mirrors.

If the smaller fish is not meant as food, I feel that letting/watching a weaker fish get beatened up or killed is just too cruel to allow it to suffer in such a way. sad.gif

Just my 2 cents. wink.gif

I agree with FH aquarium, leting a bigger fish kill a small one for ones enjoyment is jsut not me, but you can divide it instead
